In an interview with Love magazine, Rupert Humphries, senior vice president of narrative for GTA 6, discussed the background of protagonist Jason. When asked if Jason's time in the army was meant as a commentary on class or social mobility, Humphries clarified that Rockstar did not intend to make any such statement. He explained that Jason resorts to actions like drug trafficking and bank robbery due to his material circumstances. According to Humphries, players will have to decide for themselves whether Jason is driven by necessity or by personal inclination. Earlier descriptions from Rockstar detailed that Jason joined the military after a troubled youth before returning to work for local smugglers and meeting Lucia.
