Laut Aussagen von Rob Nelson, Co-Studioleiter bei Rockstar North, spielt Geld in der Handlung von GTA 6 eine deutlich größere Rolle als in früheren Serienteilen. In einem Interview mit IGN erklärte Nelson, dass Spieler ohne ausreichendes Ingame-Kapital den Verlauf der Hauptgeschichte zeitweise nicht fortsetzen können. Es gebe gezielte Spielabschnitte, in denen man aktiv in die Spielwelt hinausgehen müsse, um Barmittel für den weiteren Missionsfluss zu beschaffen. Als Beispiele für Einnahmequellen nannte der Studioleiter das Stehlen und Verkaufen von Fahrzeugen sowie das Verüben von Überfällen. Das finanzielle Vermögen der Hauptfiguren Jason und Lucia wird somit direkt an das Vorankommen in der narrativen Handlung gekoppelt.
According to Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson, money will play a far more significant role in the story of GTA 6 than in past titles. In an interview with IGN, Nelson stated that players will not be able to advance the narrative if their characters are broke. Certain points in the game will require players to actively venture into the world to earn in-game cash before unlocking further missions. The studio lead specifically mentioned stealing and selling vehicles or robbing locations as ways to obtain the needed funds. Consequently, the financial fortunes of protagonists Jason and Lucia are tied directly to narrative progression.
